#13 winter fashion show

013/365 winter fashion show, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

Thank you Daily Shoot for giving me my picture for today

:
“Make a photo of something you wear to keep yourself warm and/or dry: coat, gloves, scarf, hat, you name it!”

We definitely need a lot to keep ourselves warm this time of the year, so I simply couldn’t choose just one item. I wanted to get a photo of my darling daughter, who is into fashion and also enjoys posing in pictures (which teenage girl doesn’t?). She loves her new earmuffs, gloves and winter coat that keep her nice and warm, but most importantly look good, too!

She looks lovely in her white apparel amidst the rest of us, mainly wearing dark colours for the dark season. I have often wondered why on earth we Finns do this! When there is so little daylight, we choose to wear blacks, browns and greys, too. We should wear something brightly coloured to beat the darkness. Maybe this says something about our ‘winter soul’, reflected in our clothing, too.

We just about managed to get our photo shoot before 4 pm when the light disappears. Luckily the days are already getting noticeably longer. We have gained about 30 minutes more of daylight in a month! There is an old Finnish saying that this time of the year, each day is a rooster’s step longer than the previous one. Slowly, but surely we are heading towards spring.

Your daughter is lovely! Yes, the whites and creams look great, but I also enjoy wearing dark colours in Winter. Actually I just love dark tones with warm gear. Besides, it should be a good contrast with your snow. I can’t imagine how I’d survive if our light disappeared at 4pm. I’d want to go to sleep. We gardened outside until 9pm last night. Love the long days, don’t look forward to Winter at all, even though we don’t have extreme temperatures.

The dark season is really hard for us. Many suffer from seasonal affective disorder and would only like to eat and sleep. We are like bears who need to hibernate in winter.

Generally, many people find that their energy levels are rather low at this point. We tend to stay at home a lot in the evenings and not go out. In a way we turn inwards. I try to think that it’s actually good to have a longer period to take it easy and just lie on the settee wrapped in a warm blanket and read a book, for example, than rush around everywhere. But there are many days that I don’t manage to think positively…
Bright daylight lamps have come to the market in the last few years and many people say they really do help. They turn these lights on during breakfast to wake themselves up. I sort of mimics sunlight, I guess. Might be worth trying!
I have one cure for the winter lows – winter swimming! It must sound absolutely horrendous to you! Yes, it means dipping into a hole in the frozen sea. It works
wonders to your mood, and also is natural preventor of winter colds.
I’ll try to catch a picture from my swimming place soon so you can see!
And, of course, many people try to get the chance to travel to a warm place during winter for a couple of weeks. Thailand is the absolutely favourite for Finns at the moment.
