#97 first wild bloom

097/365 first wild bloom, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

They are, I believe, called coltsfoot in English (Tussilago farfara), but interestingly, ‘widow’s leaf’ in Finnish. They really herald the arrival of spring by colouring the ditches along roadsides.

I was so glad I decided to cycle to school for the first time today, as otherwise I would probably have missed seeing these flowers. They only need the first sunny afternoon after the snow has cleared, to push their heads through the dry grass. My cycling trip took much longer than usual, as I kept stopping to admire these flowers. Kids often enjoy picking them and taking them home to put in vases. I used to as a child.
