A sad ending to my bird nest picture story.

This morning, mother bird was walking near our car, making some starnge sounds. I thought she was trying to scare me away from her nest, but as I was rushing off to work, I didn’t look any closer.

In the afternoon it was strangely quiet around the nest. The father bird flew in once but soon left. Some hours later, with the nest still deserted, we ventured to peep in, only to find the nest all empty, and somehow messed up. There were even some blood stains on the white wood. It may have been a squirrel that got the eggs, or already hatched baby birds, at night. We’ll never know. Poor little bird parents, after all that patient hatching.

To quote Jack London in The Sea Wolf,

The big eat the little that they may continue to move, the strong eat the weak that they may retain their strength. The lucky eat the most and move the longest, that is all. What do you make of those things?
