#156 graduation day

156/365 graduation day, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

At sixteen Finnish teenagers make a big choice between the academic senior high school and the practical vocational schools. The culmination of the senior high school is graduation day.

As a sign of graduation, each students gets a white velvet cap with a black brim and a golden lyre, as a sign of their achievement. Ceremonies vary slightly from school to school, but they always end by the students having the right to wear these caps. The history of this tradition is published on the website of Helsinki university.
Later on, people wear their caps yearly on May 1st, which is a carnival style holiday, especially for students.

We had 101 graduates in our school today. It looks very festive when you first enter the hall where the rows of white caps are waiting.
