#229 a sign of the times

229/365 a sign of the times, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

I went for a cycling tour for today’s Daily Shoot:

Make a photograph that features a sign of some sort today. Maybe a stop sign. Maybe an information sign. Or an advert.

Out of the many signs that took my interest, I chose this one in the end. A beautiful 19th-century school building, which has been converted into a brewery restaurant. The pub is still called ‘Koulu’ – Finnish for ‘school’ – and even though I especially like their wine bar, I’d much rather see young students learning inside these historical walls.

The school was closed because families with children had apparently moved away from the centre of town. What’s more, the trend these days is to combine schools into bigger and bigger units, for purely financial reasons. Having smaller, safer and possibly more human school environments counts little in the calculations of administrators.

I like that idea, Susan – students of life, that’s what we truly are!
