069/2011 a day of meetings

069/2011 a day of meetings, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

A row of orange chairs agains a grey wall. Three different meetings were part of my schedule today, in addition to my teaching hours.

What has happened to our teaching jobs? A huge increase in outside classroom planning and administrative paperwork has been added to almost each teacher’s workload. I’m just thinking how many more meetings could be organised online now, saving our time of driving from place to place, and the environment at the same time!

I so agree! And, though, many are willing to do virtually when it is unlikely to meet face-to-face (i.e., long distances), there is little thought given to doing an online meeting between buildings. However, one of the meetings I recently attended virtually within our district used Adobe Connect (a positive, especially since the time was after school when we could do from home if desired), but they didn’t allow functions that would have encouraged communication amongst participants (i.e., chat or even who else was in attendance!) – being so one-sided, they may as well sent the information in an email!

I am so with you on the addition of meetings to our schedules. Here they are being added in place of daily “planning time”, stating that meeting with colleagues IS planning. Things have really changed since I started 25 years ago. Some of it good, some of it…

This particular day, after 3 meetings, I just sat down and wondered whether all of it was really that useful.
I know what you mean, Marie – I have had to listen to rather useless virtual meetings, too. Whether on- or off-line, wasting people’s valuable time is infuriating! There are certain people who have a need to feel important, and this importance is directly linked to how many meetings they have to rush to every day. I am not one of them!

In my job we have quite a few virtual meetings – and not just talking – collaboration and discussion. But I do relate to the kind of meetings you describe – have attended many of those.
