213/2011 currants galore

213/2011 currants galore, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

Blackcurrants in my brother’s garden are ready to be picked. The branches are really heavy with the clusters of berries.

This is a superfood, rich in vitamin C. I must say, on their own they taste quite bitter, but we usually make juice out of them. In my childhood, the common cold medicine used to be hot blackcurrant juice. It eased a sore throat in an instant! I can also remember how much more I used to enjoy picking these berries, sitting comfortably on a stool in the garden, as opposed to squatting in a mosquito infested forest for blueberries, for example!
