#339 recycled lanterns

339/365 recycled lanterns, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

We took our Singaporean friend for a countryside tour, to meet my brother. We also visited a small farm there, where they have started keeping a few alpaca for the wool. Around the old farmhouse, the owners had a lot of nice rustic Christmas decorations.

Baby food jars have many uses. Great idea to put a candle inside and hang them from bare branches of trees.

#309 happy diwali!

309/365 happy diwali!, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

Travelling around Helsinki for the weekend. Really dark evening but the hotel lounge had lovely candlelight, which made me remember my friends in India celebrating Diwali – the festival of lights today.Pity I just missed it, as I will leave for New Delhi next Wednesday.

Interesting how these different holidays and festivals coincide around the world – Halloween last weekend, Guy Fawkes with fireworks in Britain today, Diwali in India, and All Souls’ Day in Finland tomorrow. All to do with lights in one form or another.

#299 candlelit evening

299/365 candlelit evening, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

Make a photograph today where vertical elements or lines dominate the scene.

Focusing on vertical lines, made me remember these old candlesticks, and rummage through the drawers for some left-over taper candles from last winter. These purple ones gave a lovely, warming glow, and created another vertical line – the shadow on the wall.

This time of the year, we always look for special candle offers, to stock up for Christmas time, when we practically have lots of candles burning all through the holidays. Got to start the candle bargain hunt again soon. Like bouquets of flowers, I never get tired of candle light!

#253 start of the weekend

253/365 start of the weekend, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

Friday again – how do the weeks seem to disappear so quickly? Lovely evening to go round town, enjoy the riverside lights, and drop by at a couple of bars.

I and hubby enjoyed sitting in the new bistro-style riverside restaurant (outside picture here) in the autumn evening ambience. The new trendy decoration is to stick candles into paper bags! Looks pretty but I do hope the bags have been treated so that they won’t catch fire easily.

There is something comforting in lighting candles in the darkening evening, and wrapping yourself in their warmth.

#202 darkening nights

202/365 darkening nights, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

As much as I love the long light hours of early summer, there is also a magical charm in the darkening nights at the moment. I try to stay up to experience every second of the rare, dark moments when it’s warm around here, as, mostly, warm and dark outdoors never coincide up here in the north. It’s lovely to light colourful lanterns in the garden and enjoy their flickering glow.

When I was younger, I used to long for some time in central of southern Europe every summer, to be wrapped in the romantic and exotic warm darkness around me in the evening. With the warming of the climate, we do get a few rare instances of that even here now.
