273/2011 soaking in the colours

273/2011 soaking in the colours, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

An unusually hot day for the time of the year, and I was lucky to be by the sea in Helsinki. The solitary rowan tree really stood out in its striking autumn colours. I could have sat there for ages, enjoying the warmth, and storing all the goodness of the sun for the dark time to come.

270/2011 in lilliput land

Couldn’t you just imagine a tiny fairy, with transparent wings, hiding behind this umbrella-like cutie, on the thick and soft, mossy-green carpet 🙂

It seems to be a really good mushroom year. Some colleagues boast about dozens of kilos picked in the forest. Sadly, I am not that keen on eating them but find them interesting to look at on the ground.

269/2011 curled up

Leaves of the balcony vine, turning red, and curling up with the evening chill. Time to prepare for winter hibernation soon.

I do love the bright colours and crisp air at the moment, though!

253/2011 autumn leaves

The brushes of autumn are colouring more and more leaves now. Our big birch tree in the yard has nice yellow strokes amidst the green. Last glory before the colourless period sets in.

215/2011 glitter

215/2011 glitter, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

When the sunlight catches the wings of a dragonfly from the right angle, they reflect a magical, colourful, metallic glitter. I’ve been chasing after this sight for days, and today finally managed to capture a glimpse of it.

178/2011 transformation

This used to be a miserable, smelly pond, and look at it now! Lovely, clear water with beautiful water lilies blooming and ducks swimming. All cleaned up around as well. It’s a pleasant oasis in the middle of a concrete-covered residential area. Nice to see that people care to develop their environment.

177/2011 green dream

177/2011 green dreams, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

These huge old trees offered a welcome shade from the heatwave we’ve suddenly been hit with. I expected fairytale creatures to appear from between the foliage at any minute, walking through this wood. Even the tree trunks had turned green with the flourishing ivy climbing on them. Sunlight streaming through the leaves added to the dreamy feeling.

170/2011 by the sea

The English Channel is never still. Today, with the blustery winds, the waves were almost terrifying. So different from the calm and quiet waters of Finland!

I believe in the therapeutic powers of nature. The sound of the sea, gently lapping ashore, or roaring like a beast, always calms me down. As does this view – one of my favourites along the south coast of England: the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs.

145/2011 nature’s wonders

145/2011 nature’s wonders, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

It only took a few warm days for the the crab apple buds to start opening. Out of pink buds, tiny white flowers. The annual cycle is a delight, every single time.

141/2011 hidden beauty

141/2011 hidden beauty, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

On our way to a picnic place, we came across a huge bed of wild violets in the forest. How deinty and absolutely exquisite! What a wonderful world!

I should venture into the more untrodden paths more often!
