065/2011 dazzled by the light

065/2011 dazzled by the light, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

This has been the most beautiful weekend so far. The thick snow is still there in places, and people still go skiing, but but not for long, I don’t think. The alternating thawing in the daytime, and freezing again at night, hardens the surface of the snow so that it glistens like this in the sunshine.

Definitely spring in the air. Bird song everywhere, and the sun is warm enough to even allow sitting outside for a while after sauna!

#64 longer and longer days

064/365 longer and longer days, originally uploaded by rosipaw.

It’s always in March that I really become aware of the extra daylight hours we have gained since Christmas. The clock of our cathedral had just chimed 4 times when I took this picture, and as you can see, it’s still brilliantly sunny with blue skies. Just two months ago it was pitch dark at this time. The slightly brownish orangey hues of the light here show, though, that the sun is about to start setting.

The extra hours of light are a good boost to our energy levels. Suddenly there seems to be so much more time to do anything! I am also lucky for the next few weeks, since I finish school at noon on Fridays, and can thenk go for leisurely walks in town if the weather is as good as today.

#41 a play of light and shadow

The sun invited me for an afternoon walk today. It is noticeable how shadows on the snow are getting sharper and longer with the bright sunlight. Light and shadow – interconnected and interdependent opposites, bound together in an endless cycle. Where one ends the other begins.

I also liked the contrast between the young and thin, and old, darker and thicker birch trunks. The birch is my favourite Finnish tree because of its changing seasonal look, as opposed to the more common evergreens. We are really lucky in our country with about 60 % of the land area covered with forest and trees.

Birch trees, preferably by a lake or the sea, are an integral part of the landscape of my Finnish soul.
