133/365 toukokuu – ‘seedtime in the fields’, originally uploaded by rosipaw.
May – introducing the Finnish name to this month comes later than usual, due to my travels abroad.
May for us is TOUKOKUU.
touko = springtime work in the fields, seedtime
kuu = month (or actually ‘moon’, since a month would be ‘kuukausi’)
The name of this months also has its roots in old agricultural traditions, and the farm work done during this month. Farmers are busy ploughing their fields, ready to start planting and growing their crops. Around the countryside roads, traffic gets slow sometimes when cars can’t overtake the many tractors driving slowly on narrow roads.
